You never know when a backup firearm will save your life. However, there may be several things to consider when deciding to carry a firearm. Your Ammunition San Diego team has put together some pros and cons for carrying a backup firearm.

Comfort

If you are a preparer like me, you probably carry a gun, knife, flashlight, tactical pen, cell phone, wallet, and keychain. That’s quite the everyday carry, so adding any more equipment, like a backup firearm might be too much for some people to carry. I know what you are thinking, that you can always carry a backup gun in your ankle holster. I admit that that isn’t a bad idea, but I do recommend that if you do that, you want to make sure that practice repeatedly drawing from your ankle. If you don’t practice, when the time comes, you will be unprepared and may make a costly mistake that can make the difference between success and failure. Personally, when we at the Ammunition San Diego team carry our guns, we typically carry them in our front pocket

3 Seconds, 3 Yards, 3 Shots

Analysis of gunfights shows that the average fight involves a total of 3 shots being fired at a distance of 3 yards, and lasting no more than 3 seconds.  In other words, in your average gunfight, you don’t need multiple guns to stop your threat.Of course, not everything goes according to averages and anything is possible. So, while in most instances simply carrying an extra magazine, life is unpredictable, and it is better to be overprepared than underprepared.

Practice Makes Perfect

When carrying a backup gun, you need to practice as much with the backup as you do with the main gun. A lot of people I know carry their backup gun on their ankle and they train by falling backwards on their butt while trying to engage the threat. We definitely recommend preparing with your backup and we also recommend using a backup that is similar to the weapon that is your main weapon.

Arm Your Family Members

The bottom line is it always helps to have extra firepower if you ever are caught in a shooting situation.  Coordinate with your family and have a plan so you have multiple people on your team carrying firearms.
